Even Mother Nature will not be able to stop England in their pursuit of a third Women’s Rugby World Cup victory, and it does not appear that Canada will be able to pose a significant challenge to the claims of the Red Roses.
It poured in Auckland during England’s quarterfinal match against Australia, which could have made life difficult for the tournament favorites. However, England passed that test with flying colors, dominating the Wallaroos 41-5 to advance to the semifinals.
The forwards have dominated everyone they’ve played against and are likely to be the deciding factor in England’s match against Canada. The forwards scored all seven of England’s tries in the last eight matches they played.
The Canadian team is still unbeaten at the World Cup after advancing past the United States in the quarterfinals, but they will face a much more difficult opponent in England.
The Red Roses cruised to a 51-12 victory over the North Americans in November of 2017, and bookmakers currently have England pegged as a 26-point favorite to win the first match of the semi-final doubleheader that will take place at Eden Park in Auckland on Saturday.
The second match of the semifinals is expected to be a more competitive one. The hosts of the tournament, New Zealand, are favored by a margin of less than a converted try for their match against a France team that is attempting to reach their first World Cup final.
The French have the best defensive record in the competition, having given up just 21 points over the course of their four games, which includes a matchup against England during the pool stage.
However, France’s power game means that they match up well with England. New Zealand, on the other hand, are a different beast, and their sharp backline, led by the tournament’s top tryscorer Portia Woodman, look set to cause the underdogs all kinds of problems in dry conditions.
The Black Ferns have made steady progress throughout the World Cup, including a quarterfinal thrashing of Wales by a score of 55-3; as a result, there is a good chance that they will advance to the final with some room to spare.
